God sees your effort...
Jack had his playdate last weekend with the neighbor boy.
Andy came into the house and told us that Joshua was outside riding his bike. When I asked Jack if he wanted to join him he said..
"well, he needs me as his friend, lets go."
Approaching Josh and his sister who is also deaf but reads lips and is not autistic, I could tell jack was nervous.
He wasn't quite sure how this was going to go, neither was I but we were IN IT.
This is what LIVING is ALL about.
These moments you will never forget, yup this is living.
We walked over carrying our soccer ball. Josh was riding his bike (without training wheels) around the middle of the street.
His beautiful sister Sarah was chasing after him and pulling him to the side of the road then scolding him with sign language and shouting at him. He smiled, nodded, and patted her hand away and kept on going.
I chatted with is grandma Ann.
We had awkward silence times.
Jack got in front of josh's bike once or twice when Ihad to pull him out of the way since Josh can only see peripherally. Josh didnt want tot run him over, he just couldn't see him.
Jack thought this was an interesting concept.
He also worked very hard with getting his attention.
Jack jumped, waved his arms, yelled (to no avail obviously) made crazy faces and ran after Josh on his bike trying to get him to "play" with him.
Grandma explained to Jack that when Josh does see him he will be very happy.
OK.. Ill wait.
Josh climbed off his bike and came ove rth grandma and myself. Grandma signed to Josh that this was jack, he wanted to play soccer with him inthe yard.
Josh hooted, yelled, screamed and howled.
Jack looked at me and I gave him a thumbs up!
"Hey Jack, Josh wants to play with you-that sounds like happy sounds don't they?"
"Yeah I think so."
OK.
They ran around the houses, over and over. circling.
Josh has little impulse control, (sounds like someone else I know)
But Josh has TERRIBLE impulse control.
He wants to hug and hold, and squeeze Jack. Grandma said it is his way of communicating he is happy with you.
Jack hugged him back a few times then said, while gesturing his best sign language-
"Dude, your hurting me, stop squeezing so hard!"
waving his arms in an x in front o fhis body, and shaking his head no. giving Josh the STOP hands up.
Josh said... out loud... "SORRRY"
They then mounted the bikes.
How do you ride bikes with a blind kid?
VERY CAREFULLY!
Josh is obviously used to not too many people trying to ride next to him.
He also doenst have training wheels, so he is a little whobbly.
But...
Because, we never give up, evver.
We did it. Jack stayed in front and was the leader, Josh stayed following behind Jack as best he could. When Jack was going to slow, Josh would pass him loop around and pass him coming head first like CHICKEN... but on bikes. If my hticker didnt give out this day it never will.
They circled around the church parking lot, they rode inthe grass, ran around the basketball court.
Sarah came over a few times and Jack was trying to talk to her, she kept telling him to slow down.
She couldnt understand him.
He slowed down, but got bored of the conversation. He prefered his non verbal friend.
We played about an hour.
I had meatballs onthe stove that needed tending so I gave Jack ten minutes left warning.
By this point they were off their bikes and close to wrestling in the grass.
Josh was thrilled to play with Jack.
Jack was tired out. emotionally, intellectually and physically.
When I said time to pack it in pal. Almost dark.
He headed over to his bike to ride home.
Josh was on it.
He didnt want to get off.
Jack was doing his best shouting sign language/...
Peddling hands and arms, pointing to ur house, spooning food in his mouth,
:"Josh, I need my BIKE,, to go HOME and EAT my DINNER!"
Josh wailed, not crying but a disappointed dont go wail.
OK Here is my MOMENT.
Jack went over and held his face, as I do his face....
and said.
"Josh, are you looking at me, we will play again, I will come back, I promise I am your friend."
Grandma started to cry. I started to well up, and Jack and Josh exchanged bikes and waved goodbye.
We headed down river street. Jack going extra slow, he didnt want to crash.
Well that was fun.
Yeah, that was fun...
Whats for dinner?
Oh dear jack, you are the brightest star in my sky, I am forever your girl. You will touch so many and reach so high, I can only pray to see that day.
An emotional Eureka for myself.
I am blessed. truly blessed everyday. Thank you God. Truly Thank you for this boy.
See this picture?
That is me in the background, just watching, observing. admiring, and waiting for a moment he may turn around and say "MAAAA! C'MON!" which he does.
I will always be right there Jack, wherever you go, whenever, good times bad times, just think of me, being always right over your shoulder. Ill be watching and always so very proud of you. No need to turn around, Never doubt for a second that I am there. With the whisp of wind, with the drops of rain, with sun that shines and lights your beautiful hair. I am with you. Just like this day-in NY state, your adventure walk. I was there.
So your adventure of life, whether Im near or far. I will be with you. Every step of the way.
Love you. MOMMY.
