Metaphorically speaking... Geez.
Had a lovely day today. Finally feeling better since I've been dealing with Bronchitis for a week.
We had our cards party this past weekend here at our house. My first attempt at hosting and it was a success. My cousins came and we talked, laughed, reminisced, talked of future events. Weddings, babies, grandparents, Christmas, Thanksgiving.
We spent the night with three generations of women playing a an old card game called Pottstown Rummy. Its a game we have recordings of our women playing thirty years ago.
As I think of the occasion of us getting together to play, I am eased into thoughts of my childhood watching my Nana, Aunts, and family friends playing cards, howling and cackling with laughter. I invision days out the mountain under the shelter with swirls of smoke rising from the table as these women chatted and "May I'd" their afternoons away. I would sit sometimes and watch the bags of candy my Aunt Ruth would bring be passed around. Bottles of beer and tall glasses of "drinks" sweating rings on the plastic tablecloths. Ashtrays and ladylike cigarette cases on the corners of the tables -for the smokes that would be enjoyed and chatted through while dangling from lipsticked smiles. Where the men were on these afternoons I don't recall. I don"t recall really being concerned either. My Nana and her sisters. What I imagine their lives to have been, and how I envy what it was all about. We will never really know. I wont anyway, I can only attempt at making what I have, memorable.
In hindsight now, we are pretty cool ourselves, my cardplaying crowd. Our ages range from 70-my beautiful matriarchal Mom. to the youngest player, my daughter 22, her namesake, and nearly as beautiful.
Everyone in between.
We have reps from each of the sisters at our NEW card club.
Aunt Betty is represented well by her daughter Linda with her contagious smile and always open heart. Michelle my always gorgeous, always generous cousin Betty's grand daughter. The one cousin that has always had the "I'm here for you" and truly means it. A heart of gold and sharp wit and humor.
Our Aunt Ruth, who was my Godmother is represented by Maureen and her daughter Molly. They are the cousins that have always accepted everyone for who and what they are. Generous hearts and kindness. They have lost alot of their family early. Although mention was made that they are the "smallest" in numbers Their clan is irreplaceable and the Robinson's will never ever be far from our sides. I can't imagine my world without them.
Then my Nana represented by my Mom, Myself and Allie. Cathy was away for the weekend and would be in on the card chuckles. What can I say about us. hmmmmm.
Well- We are a family of women that have a few men around every so often. We have our own world and existence that no one else even knows about. A secret society of sorts. No need to spread the word- no reason to explain any further. We just have it. We got it from our genes and Im never letting it go.
My Mom spent the night tonight. Andy is away on business so we got a chance to just be GIRLs for the week. Tonight Allie, Nana, Jack, Missi and Myself were all in my bed. Not lined up and heehaw like. just watching tv, reading abook, working on the computer and talking on the phone. When I looked at us I said nothing- for fear of breaking the moment.
I closed my eyes tight and took a mental picture of the moment.
We were an island.
On a queen size bed..
And now you know... We are an island.
The Burke sisters created something really grand but had no idea what they would have all these years later. So I imagine We are creating something really grand also.
As long as we keep our boats tied tight enough to not drift away but loose enough to be able to ride the waves.
Metaphors are flying tonight aren't they?
We are islands, and boats Good Gawwd Suz. HAHAH
